FOR TEACHERS
PLANNING A VISIT TO THE CAPTAIN COOK BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM
Curriculum based Tours and Workshops
The museum offers a variety of services tailor-made to suit the needs of your
group. However you can still visit the museum without taking up any of these
services. Advance booking for all visits is required. All bookings are subject
to availability.
MENU OF SERVICES:
- £1 per pupil per half day session with an education officer (minimum
charge £20)
- £2 per pupil per full day session with an education officer (if museum
staff are required for the full day)
- Please note that museum admission charges of £1.20 per child and £2.40
per adult are additional to these charges (one adult goes free with every
10 pupils).
RESOURCES:
Guided tours: Discover more about Cook, his childhood and famous voyages. Food
tasting, object handling and interactive activities throughout the tours.
(Tours can be 1 or 2 hour sessions.)
Interactive workshops: Opportunities to dress up, use a quill pen, produce
your own piece of Aboriginal artwork and much more. Workshops can be adapted
to suit groups’ needs. (These can be 1 or 2 hour sessions)
Captain Cook and Australia loans box: Loans box filled with ideas and resources
to bring your classroom to life with pre- and post-visit activities.

Sessions usually run from either 10am to 12 noon or 1pm to 3pm. All day sessions
from 10am to 3pm are also available. Each session can accommodate a maximum
of 60 children. These can be tailored to suit the needs of your group.
Practical advice for arranging your visit
- To gain the most from their visit children should be closely supervised.
We suggest a ratio of 1 adult per 10 children.
- We suggest that you bring a maximum of 90 children on self-led visits.
It will be useful to split into smaller groups of 30 and stagger entry by
around 10 minutes to avoid bottlenecks.
- Disabled parking and coach access to the museum is from The Grove entrance
into Stewart Park.
- A visit can take from 2 hours to a full day. The museum offers free admission
for teachers prior to their class visit to aid planning.
- To prevent bottlenecks in the reception area please arrange for small groups
to visit the shop at separate times during your visit.
Education Officers
- The Education Officers are on site to help you plan and arrange visits,
organise bookings for the education suite, facilitate guided tours and workshops,
advise about our facilities and recommend resources.

Accessibility
- The museum has 2 lifts that allow for wheelchair and pram access to every
floor in the museum.
- There is an orange disabled badge holder’s parking bay at the front
of the museum. Access to this car park is via The Grove entrance to Stewart
Park.
- A wheelchair is available for use by visitors. Prior notice is preferred.
- A disabled toilet is located on the ground floor
Education Suite
- The Discovery Centre is a bright, stimulating classroom packed with information,
resources and ideas. This room is used for interactive workshops for visiting
groups and for meetings and events.
- The Discovery Centre can comfortably house up to 30 children.
- The Endeavour Room can accommodate up to 60 people. This room hosts temporary
exhibitions and is also used for school lunches, lectures, events and meetings.
Use of this room is free to visiting classes, although advance booking is
essential!

Teacher's Pack
A teacher's pack is available to assist teachers and group leaders in organising
their visit. Included in the pack are information sheets, pupil worksheets
and on-site activity ideas. The pack is available from the museum shop price £2.50
or £3.50 mail order.
Other facilities
- A shop is housed in the reception area, which sells a range of stock, from “pocket
money items” to quality gifts.
- Vending machine area provides hot and cold drinks and snacks.
- Male, Female and disabled toilets are located close to the main entrance
of the museum.
